The genuine part

Reuters started with forty pigeons and a gap in the telegraph.

In 1850 the line between Brussels and Aachen was unfinished. Paul Julius Reuter put homing pigeons on that gap. They carried closing prices. They beat the mail. The wire caught up; the birds were retired. The job did not go away — it just got uglier screens.

A price is a note that wants to be somewhere else before the other desk has it.
